I am pro-choice because I believe that every person has the right to make decisions about their own body and life. Reading my fellow young women’s stories has empowered me to speak out about reproductive rights more than I ever have in my life.
I, like some of the other gang members, don’t have a moment or big story about why I am pro-choice. I haven’t had an abortion and I know very few women who have. But I have read stories about the tragedy that happens when a woman has no options.
The idea that someone else could make a decision for me that would affect the rest of my life makes my head spin.
This is a human rights issue. Making abortion illegal would be a clear violation of human rights. A woman should be able to make her own decision regarding pregnancy and any other reproductive issue. It’s her body, her choice. Taking that right away takes everything away.
I choose to stand up and speak out about this issue because people are uninformed. I know women my age who are clueless about feminism, women’s rights and reproductive rights. They have no idea that women all over the country are denied the choice and unable to access comprehensive reproductive services every day. They have no idea that women travel hours or days to other states, because they cannot get an abortion in the state they live in and that scares me. I want to inform others and be a voice for women who might not be able to speak for themselves.
I value women and I trust women. I am a woman and I believe in the right to choose.
